ABOUT:This was a very intentional departure from my normal style, and adding this song to a page with a picture of an angel in the header is just really odd. This is not a song about angelic behavior. Of course the good news is that it is an instrumental, so the meaning is really left up to your interpretation.
Apothecary Mary started with a sort of throbbing bluesy piano piece and grew from that. I wanted it to have a sort of "raw" feeling to it, almost as if it were recorded live. The rolling bass is one of my all time favorites, as is the arpeggio piano in the chorus. I always felt that the song would work really well with a guitar solo in the second verse, but I haven't been able to replicate the sound I want on a keyboard (yet!). So, I have finally jumped off the fence and decided to release it as is. I hope you will enjoy the track. As always, I invite you to let me know what you think, good or bad. You can email me at
INSTRUMENT VOICING: These are all Roland voices from a JV-35 (piano, rock piano, bass, drums and sax). Listen close and you might notice a grand being played in the lower register, panned far left, to help support the bottom and give an almost subliminal gutteral sound (we pushed the low ceiling a bit in the export, so this is a little more noticeable on the MP3). There are at least two tracks of almost everything, and for the release of this song we pulled each track individually out of MasterTracks and remixed the entire song.
HARDWARE/SOFTWARE:Roland JV-35, a Mac Performa 6400, my friend MasterTracks Pro, a DBX gate, an Aphex Aurel Exciter, Tascam board, M-Audio SOLO firewire interface and Garage Band to get the track out of MasterTracks, Bias Peak software to get the MP3, Audio2SWF to get the Flash. And Dreamweaver and Photoshop CS2 to build this page. A sincere thanks to all of those whose hard work on these products made it possible for me to share this with you.
MP3 "TIPWARE" DOWNLOAD: The digital audio track playing is Flash media. You can also download the DRM-free, 192Kbps MP3for free, but please consider clicking the PayPal BUY NOW button and leaving a $1.30 "tip" for JD (PayPal keeps about $0.40). Thank you!
